Three-Alarm Fire at Sutton Ridge Condos

Early morning blaze Tuesday displaces residents on Gate Hill Place.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials estimate more than $1 million of damage after a fire at Sutton Ridge Condos early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 11404 Gate Hill Pl. about 1:20 a.m. Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear and roof of the 18-unit, three-story structure upon arrival.

The Incident Commander struck second and third fire alarms, bringing over 100 firefighters—some from Loudoun County and Fairfax City—to the scene.

Despite a partial roof collapse, the fire was under control in 90 minutes and extinguished in two hours.

Nine of the 18 condominiums were affected by the fire, but alarms sounded and residents were able to get out unharmed.  Five units suffered major fire, smoke, and water damage, and four other units received light-to -moderate damage.

The remaining nine units were able to reoccupy their homes after electricity was restored.

Fire officials say about 18 occupants have been displaced. The American Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management are providing assistance.

One resident was treated at the scene by paramedics and later released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but one witness said it may have began when an HVAC unit exploded.
