South Lakes High School's recent production of West Side Story earned two Cappie awards at Sunday's gala at the John F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts.
Senior Ariana Kruszewski, who played Maria in West Side Story, won Female Vocalist. This is the second year in a row SLHS has won that award. Abby Coryell took home the title in 2011 for her role in The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Kyle Norfleet, Michelle Slivinski, Jenny Rubin and Caitlyn Herron won a Cappie for their work on marketing and publicity. The team organized unique ideas such as a flash mob to promote the play.
The Cappies are the Capital Area theater critics and awards program that covers the Washington, DC, metro area. Students review performances at other schools and vote for award winners.
Junior Sean McCoy, who played Riff in West Side Story, was also a nominee for Supporting Actor.
