Second RA Board Candidate Withdraws from Race
Larry Dunn says he is no longer running for Reston Association Northpoint Director; All three seats will have unopposed candidates.
Larry Dunn, a candidate for the Northpoint Director spot in the 2013 Reston Association Board of Directors election, has withdrawn from the race.
Dunn, a retired soldier and corrections officer, is the second board candidate in the last few days to drop out. At-large candidate John Farrell, a land use lawyer and longtime Reston resident who also ran for an at-large spot in 2012, withdrew his application late last week.
That means the three open RA Board positions will all be uncontested races.
Realtor Eve Thompson is now unopposed for the Lake Anne/Tall Oaks seat. RA president Ken Knueven is the only at-large candidate and former Reston Runners president Tim Cohn is unopposed for the Northpoint spot.
Leaving the board are at-large director Joe Leighton, who cannot run again due to term limits, and Northpoint director Mike Collins, who is not running for re-election. Knueven's term as Lake Anne/Tall Oaks director is also ending, but he is running again as the at-large candidate.
Also, RA CEO Milton Matthews announced last week he will leave his job this spring. The association will be conducting a search for a new executive.
Voting begins March 4.

Hpefully, no one else will withdraw. These association positions can be thankless, so it's nice there are at least 3 people willing to run.

Since all are running unopposed, does there even need to be an election? Can any money be saved by not mailing out ballots etc?

What if the voters "drop out" too? Does a certain percentage of the electorate have to vote for there to be "a winnah!"?
What's the point of the election if there are no contested races? Are write-in ballots allowed?

Thanks! I wish I could run. Imagine, a fiscal conservative on the RA Board. I would try to find ways to REDUCE the assessment, to REDUCE the size of RA, even if people were laid off. I think we should not hire anyone to replace the CEO and see if anyone even notices!
