Reston Vision Committee Completes its Report
This arm of Special Study Master Plan Task Force sees "A Complete Community Along the Metro Silver Line."
The Reston Master Plan Special Study's Vision Committee has completed its final report on what the Reston of the 21st Century should look like.
The group makes recommendations on the vision and principles for urban design, transportation and public facilities. The committee says in the report it would like to see, among other things, a grid street pattern, more access for bikers and pedestrians, a performing arts center near the Town Center Metro station, a memorial sculpture garden near one of the Metro stations, and a major city park near the Town Center.
"The most significant recommendation provides the opportunity to transform the existing office and industrial corridor into a linear, transit- and pedestrian-oriented neighborhood with three new Metro stations," the report said. "Each transit station area will have a combination of jobs, a range of housing choices, and amenities and facilities that can be recognized for outstanding planning and design."
"Another significant opportunity is to transform each of the five village centers without expanding existing boundaries into dynamic focal points of civic activity for the surrounding neighborhoods instead of strip shopping centers."
The report will be presented at the Master Plan Special Study Task Force's meeting on Tuesday. To read the entire report, click here.

I will look forward to reading the complete report by the Reston Vision Committee. I am a Reston resident and have written to government officials for years to approve of sidewalks and street lights along North Shore Drive. It is a major thoroughfare, and yet, hit or miss in terms of sidewalks and street lights. There are no continuous pedestrian walks and cars are parked all along the North Shore curbs which at times forces pedestrians into traffic lanes; including those pushing baby carriage or those residents in wheelchairs!
We recently received news of a possible indoor tennis court structure which will cost millions to Reston Community Assoc and residents. An outrage. Sidewalks and streetlights affect more residents' safety and usage and should be a priority. I daresay that more residents are walkers especially on a major thoroughfare to the new Metro line.
I am also mystified by the fact that the speed limit on North Shore Drive is 35 mph. We all know that the speed to which many cars travel on that road is closer to 45-50mph! Try crossing the road at any point without having to run, which is quite dangerous.
Spring street in Herndon is 25 mph and both sides have continuous sidewalks and lighting. That speed limit is strictly enforced and yet, it is not solely a residential area. I hope the Reston Vision Committee has addressed these issues especially for those of us living close to Metro and Town Center on North Shore Dr. Thank You.
