Reston Association VP Thomas Won't Run For Re-Election

Top leadership changes to take place in 2012.

Reston Association Vice President Paul Thomas says he will not seek re-election for his board of directors seat in 2012.

Thomas, at at-large member, is finishing his first full term as an board of directors member and is RA's representative to the Master Plan Special Study Task Force. He also serves as a liaison to the Design Review Board  and on the Transportation Advisory Committee.

Thomas says he is giving up his seat to spend more time with his family. His children are 10 and 6.

"I want to be able to coach their soccer teams and help with swim team," he said. "I don't have the time and energy to do those things and do all that RA needs."

Thomas has lived in Reston since he was a child and is a graduate of South Lakes High School. He is a curriculum developer for K12 in Herndon and has served on the RA board for four years, first as a replacement for a year left in former director Jen Blackwell's term, then as an at-large director.

RA President Kathleen Driscoll McKee's second term as the South Lakes Director ends in 2012, and due to term limits she cannot run again. The other director seat expiring next year is at-large director Tom Vis.

Any Restonians interested in running for one of the open seats can attend an informational meeting at RA Headquarters on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. The deadline for filing candidacy is Feb. 3, 2012. The election balloting begins on March 5 and ends March 30.

I've worked productively with Paul on a number of community issues over the years, and I admire him greatly. His good humor, creativity, diligence, and dedication to a better Reston will be greatly missed.

As the father of a 10-year-old myself, I can completely understand Paul's desire to spend more time with his family. But I hope that he'll stay involved in community leadership in whatever capacity his schedule allows. Best of luck, Paul!

Paul is an up and coming younger leader in the Reston community. His thoughtful, well-reasoned positions and hard work have helped to guide the Reston Association and have been especially important in trying to bring reason to the Master Plan Task Force.
He will be missed, but Reston youth sports will be gaining a winner.

Colin and John: Thanks for the kind words and for the support and dialog these past years. The community is lucky to have you two (among many others) so involved in making Reston a great place.
