Residents, Leaders Express Crescent Concern

VOICE wants Fairfax County, developers to keep interests of Crescent Apartments in mind during redevelopment.

Faith leaders and residents of Crescent Apartments in Reston held a One Reston walk on Sunday to bring attention to the need for affordable housing in Reston.

Crescent Apartments, a 181-unit affordable housing complex near Lake Anne, is owned by Fairfax County and is slated for redevelopment.

Fairfax County is currently reviewing Requests for Proposals from several developers. It is not yet known what we will be built on the Crescent site, but there will be units set aside for affordable housing, as per county regulations.

However, VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith  Community Engagement)  and community leaders are concerned that the current income criteria (in the Request for Proposals) could displace many residents.

VOICE leaders said they have met with Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins. They have asked the negotiations with the developer finalists explicitly include the financing and design to ensure that current residents and other families earning between $30,000 and $50,000 a year are able to remain at Crescent after the development; and that VOICE and tenant leaders have a “seat at the table” with senior Fairfax County officials charged with negotiating the Crescent development  package.

“This is not just a place to live. This is a community…we all work hard and we help each other” Andres Paz, a dental hygienist and current Crescent resident, said at the walk.
