RA's Winter Bird Count Shows More Than 2,000 Birds

Tally uses community help to identify Reston's feathered residents.

The results are in, and they show that Reston is home to 51 species of birds.

environmental education specialist Abby Stocking said that Jan. 8's , conducted with help from community volunteers, yielded 2,060 birds. Among the most popular species: Canada geese, American robins, American goldfinch, dark-eyed juncos and northern cardinals.

"I’d say some of this year’s highlights include the red-breasted nuthatches, swamp sparrows and ruddy ducks," Stocking said in an e-mail.  There was also a common merganser spotted for the first time, she said.
