RA Will Name Dogwood Pavilion for Employee

Reston Association will dedicate the renovated Dogwood Pool Picnic Pavilion in memory of Dan Warfield, a longtime RA employee who died in December.

Warfield, 56, was a 36-year RA employee when he became sick and died in late 2012. He served many roles for RA, particularly in managing construction crews and projects. At the time of his death, he was the capital projects manager and was named the association's 2012 Employee of the Year.

"Dan was sharp-witted, full of energy and humor and had a real passion for Reston," said Larry Butler, RA Director of Parks and Recreation. "His work touched almost every facility in Reston, including pathways, bridges, pavilions, pools and tennis courts."

Two of Warfield's proudest projects were the Nature House, completed in 2009, and Dogwood Pool, which will be rededicated May 11 after a complete renovation. Dogwood Pool, closed since August 2010, was originally scheduled to reopen during the 2012 swim season.

In addition to a naming plaque at the pavilion, RA will also install two mosaic panels on the concrete bench adjacent to the pavilion. RA hopes the mosaics will be created by artist Valerie Theberge, who is creating public art for the fountain feature at Dogwood. The mosaics will reflect Warfield's interests of music and boating, said Butler.

The board voted unanimously for the dedication at its regular meeting last week. No impact to the operating fund is expected, said Butler. Expenses will be funded by donations from staff, family and friends of Warfield, he said.
