RA's Collins Won't Run for Re-election

North Point Director taking new job with Gerry Connolly's Fairfax Office.

Reston Association North Point Director Mike Collins will not run for re-election in 2013.

Collins, 40, has served one three-year term. He is taking a new job Feb. 1 as Fairfax Outreach Director for Rep Gerry Connolly (D-11th).

He calls serving on the RA Board "one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done and I will miss it."

Collins, who will be leaving his job as legislative counsel to Rep. Corrine Brown (D) of Florida, is a relative newcomer to Reston. He and his wife, Sarah, relocated here from California in 2008.

"This was not an easy decision," said Collins of deciding not to seek a second term. "Upon very serious reflection, I concluded that I can't pass up this opportunity for professional growth and I can't effectively serve both RA and the people of the 11th District while campaigning for re-election and serving a second term if I win."

Collins said he "will continue to serve the Reston community at large through the Congressman and on my own time."

Interested in running for Collins' North Point seat (or Lake Anne or At-large)? The deadline for filing is 5 p.m. on Feb. 1.

To run for the board, candidates must fill out a statement of candidacy and get at least 25 signatures on a petition of candidacy.  Full information is available on the Reston Association website, www.reston.org

You can also e-mail the elections committee staff liaison, Cate Fulkerson at cate@reston.org or call her at 703 435-6512.

Voting for the 2013 election begins March 4.

I want to publicly thank Mike for his service to Reston and beyond. Mike is a passionate leader and I have learned so much from him. Sitting next to him for the last two years on the RA board has been a blessing. I will miss him as a table-mate, but know we will get to spend more time together working to better this wonderful community. Congrats and again we are grateful for your service.

Thank you Amanda! I love that the one picture Patch posts is of me getting an earful from people opposed to an indoor tennis facility two years ago. And yes, I loved this position even that night. Interacting with so many smart, passionate, and articulate Restonians is one of the best parts of the job.

But you look like you are taking charge in this picture! We cropped out the angry mob! (just kidding, readers, there was no angry mob).

Common law defines a mob as 3 or more people.

There were certainly more than 3 angry people at the meeting that night. So maybe it was a mob.

Mike handled himself with grace and aplomb,

while throwing me to the lions.

Thanks, guy! ;-)
