Reston Runners organizing their first marathon.
The Reston Runners received approval from Reston Association last week to go ahead with plans for Reston's first marathon.
About one-third of the course of the Runners Marathon of Reston will take place on RA paths. The race, scheduled for March 24, will finish at South Lakes High School.
Reston Runners representatives told the RA Board at its regular meeting Thursday that Northern Virginia (except for a portion of the annual Marine Corps Marathon that goes through Arlington) does not have a marathon-length race and that Reston would be a great fit to host a marathon.
There will also be a half-marathon option. To see the course map, click here.
Registration for the event will begin on Sept. 30. Reston Runners will also sponsor a training program that begins in November.
The race will benefit the Reston Runners Community Fund.

Pretty sure the marine corps marathon is NOVA based even though it meanders through DC - surely someone thought of that?

The officials were touting this as Nova's first marathon. But technically yes, correct, about MCM. Perhaps they mean Fairfax County when they say Northern Virginia?

A marathon ties up streets for 8-10 hours, especially when the course is a double loop on the same streets.
How many of these kind of events tie up the streets of south Reston every year?
Some of us actually like to get to church, kid's sports, groceries or work on Sunday.
Why aren't these events ever held in north Reston where the organizers live?

The roads will be closed to runners by 1:30pm (doing the math from the web site: 7:30am + 6 hours). And, if they run this race like other foot races in south Reston, the roads will generally not be completely closed

There was a road race in South Reston this Sunday morning. I understand it was run by a for profit organization.
There's one going on almost 2x per month.
Enough already.

This is great news. Now I have no excuse NOT to train for a marathon -- it's right in my backyard! Great publicity for Reston & our healthy & physically active residents!
