Police: Shooting Likely Drug Related

Law enforcement says violence not a threat to larger community.

Police are continuing to investigate the homicide of Colvin Morris, the 34-year-old man who was shot on Cameron Crescent Drive on Monday.

Fairfax County Police Second Lt. Tim Settle said at Thursday's Board of Directors meeting that the shooting "appears to be over a drug deal gone bad."

"Detectives are actively looking at all leads," he said. "This was not gang related."

Morris, who lived on Richmond Highway in Alexandria but is believed to have grown up in Reston, was shot in the parking lot in the 1500 block of Cameron Crescent Drive about 4:15 p.m. Monday.

Police patrol units and helicopters then tried to locate what they said were three suspects who may have fled in a pickup truck.

Morris was taken to Reston Hospital Center, where he died.

Morris' death was the ninth homicide in Fairfax County - and the first in Reston - in 2011.

Morris previously lived on Beacontree Lane in Reston and had several previous charges against him. In 2009 alone, he was charged with contempt of court,  selling drugs, grand larceny,  a probation violation and unauthorized use of an auto, according to court records.

Settle also gave the Reston District Station's semi-annual crime report at the RA meeting. He said there have been 20 graffiti incidents and 13 residential burglaries in the last several months. The suspects in nine of the 13 burglaries have been arrested and are awaiting trial. There has been one gang assault in Reston and no reports of sex offenses.

Settle said the bike paths have seen any increase in suspicious incidents.

"We continue to have bike patrols evening and night," he said. "We ask that citizens be aware on paths. If uncomfortable, turn and go the other way."
