Police Charge Two in School Vandalism Case
Reston men suspected of trashing Sunset Hills Montessori's bus Sunday night.
Fairfax County Police have charged two Reston residents with destruction of property, possession of fictitious ID and other charges in connection with vandalism at Sunset Hills Montessori School last week.
Kevin M. Steidler, 20, of 11900 block of Sentinel Point Court, was charged with possession of fictitious identification, destruction of property and vehicle trespass.
Brendan A. Galbraith, 18, of the 10900 block of Thrush Ridge Road, was charged with underage possession of alcohol, destruction of property and vehicle trespass.
Police were called to the school in the 11100 block of Ridge Heights Road at 1:55 a.m. Saturday after they received a call of suspicious person there.
Upon arrival, responding officers were alerted by load noises coming from the parking lot of Sunset Hills Montessori, Officer Bud Walker said.
Officers then observed two men throwing objects at a bus in the parking lot. The suspects attempted to flee but were caught by officers in some nearby woods. Further investigation revealed heavy destruction to the interior and exterior of the bus as well as a nearby bench, Walker said.
Head of School Eileen Minarik said the suspects had dumped trash on the bus, sprayed the fire extinguisher in the interior, knocked out several bus windows, doused it with motor oil and attempted to set the bus on fire.
Police said it is not believed that this case is connected with any other case. South Lakes High School also was the target of vandals on Sunday night. Two juveniles have been charged in that case.

My son went to SHMS and many field trips on that bus. I can just imagine the sad little faces on the children when they got to school on Monday. I'm glad they caught the idiots.

I despise how commenters on stories like this are so quick to judge. It is one of the most destructive impulses of the "new" media, and could spell the death of our civilization. Everyone is instantly deemed guilty guilty guilty on the basis of a quick story, an anecdote, personal bias, prejudice, and a load of other dirty laundry and conclusion-jumping. One reason we do NOT condone vigilantism is to keep gunslingers away from suspects. Nothing will prevent "idiot" commenters on rumormongering networks that Patch stories create. But I, for one, am "glad" we have a legal system that protects those charged with a crime as innocent until they are proven guilty. Most of the time, anyway. As for the rest of the time, we'd better be "vigilant" about those democratic protections we may want for ourselves or our own loved ones some day.

Graham - This info is based off of police reports. Media have been reporting news from police reports since way before there was Patch or any new media. In any crime story, an arrest does not mean a conviction. So I am not following you on how this is anecdotes, personal bias or dirty laundry. These are the facts. I hope those who comment on stories will read the facts, but they are entitled to an opinion (which other readers, I believe, are smart enough to know are not facts).

Whether or not those arrested are guilty, I would hope most would agree that the vandalism was idiotic. I "apologize if my comments offended anyone"...

These boys are nice boys they would always help me carry my groceries from the store to my car. I believe the true people to blame is the people who called the cops on these poor boys. People these days never mind their own business and are always snooping around in other peoples business like this reporter. I hope these boys are forgiven by the judge and people in this community start minding their own business.

Are you kidding Grandma? They were caught by the police vandalizing a school bus, and you think they should be forgiven and let off because they've helped you carry groceries in the past? "Nice gentlemen" do NOT commit crimes. This was beyond stupidity.... it was cruel and hateful.

Also Kevin Steidler is a marine fighting for your freedom and if you call him an idiot then you're calling America an idiot. Very unamerican readers you have here at the patch. What a shame.

"Grandma", I don't know where to begin. First, you're not a "Grandma," you're probably a buddy of one of the accused. Nice of you to defend them. Okay, let's begin. "True people to blame is the people who called the cops on these poor boys." Yes, reporting suspicious behavior should be frowned upon. Right. Poor boys? Did you read what they're accused of? Did you miss the part about the damage their accused of doing and then trying to flee the scene when police arrived? Next: "Mind their own business." Yes, criminal activity is personal business. How dare anyone stick their nose into the behavior of two idiots smashing up a school. Next: "Snooping around." No one is snooping around; the reporter got a hold of the police report, which is a public record. No snooping there. Next: "Forgiven by the judge." Sure no problem, smash up a school. We forgive you. Have a nice day, boys! Next: If Kevin is indeed a Marine, he should know better. I am from a military family and I can tell you this behavior is disgraceful to the service and the nation. Next: "Very unamerican." Yes, you're right. Caring about our community is unamerican. If only we could be as American as you, "Grandma"

Well wildcat Mack if that is your real name which I highly doubt it is, my comments are simply an opinion and if you do not agree with them you don't have to read them. Secondly, I stand by my argument that these boys are nice gentlemen who have helped me in the past and that people do need to be less concerned with other people like you being concerned with me.

Well, Grandma. So how do you feel about the animal slashings at Frying Pan Park in Herndon? Just some nice boys maybe!

I'd be really careful if I were you. They might see an easy mark. Nice gentlemen do not do stuff like that. Where did you grow up?

Ok, "Grandma" I respect your opinion of the "nice gentlemen" , but please stop ignoring the police report:
"Further investigation revealed heavy destruction to the interior and exterior of the bus as well as a nearby bench. The suspects dumped trash on the bus, sprayed the fire extinguisher in the interior, knocked out several bus windows, doused it with motor oil and attempted to set the bus on fire."
And they were dumb enough to get caught on site.
Yes my name is Mack and I am a Wildcat. But you will keep pretending you're 50 years older than you really are.

Point of information: motor oil cannot succeed in setting the bus on fire. It doesn't burn like that.
These young men had an obvious lapse of judgment. Let us not jump to conclusions about the character and true nature of these men. They will now have learned a lesson. At the end for day I am thankful that no one got hurt and only a bus was damaged.

Sure, only a bus. What if it had been your car? Feel the same then? I think not.

There has been a wave of these types of incidents: car break-ins, vandalism, break in at SLHS in the area, and I'm glad to see citizens are not standing for it and police are reacting quickly. They can have their day in court but for now I'm glad they were caught. Go find something better to do, idiots.
