Memorial Service Set for Dick Hays

Longtime Reston resident and activist died in Colorado.

A memorial service for longtime Reston activist Dick Hays will be held at the on Friday, March 23, at 1 p.m.

Hays, 78, died of complications of Alzheimer's disease on Feb. 25 at his home in Castle Rock, CO, where he moved in 2010. 

A former deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Education, Hays and his late wife, Janet, moved to Reston in 1966 and both became very active in community affairs.  They received a Best of Reston award in 2004.

Hays was the first to hold several positions, including PTA president of both Lake Anne Elementary School and the Reston Citizens Association.  He founded the Reston Bicycle Club, co-founded the Reston Triathlon, and played a major role in getting the W&OD rail line transformed into the W&OD Railroad Regional Park.

His passion was bicycling, and he and his wife led bicycle trips throughout the US and in several foreign countries.

Hays is survived by a brother, Jess, of California, and three sons, Jeffrey of Saga, Japan; Steven of Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Michael of Castle Rock, CO.
