Lifetime Fitness Gets Special Zoning Permit

Health club was seeking approval from Fairfax County zoning in order to build facility in Reston.

Update: The application for Lifetime Fitness' special zoning permit was approved by the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals.

It is the first of many steps necessary at the county level in order to build and open a club in Reston.

Original Story: Lifetime Fitness, the chain of health clubs with 91 locations, has filed an application with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals to permit a health club to be built at the terminus of Business Center Drive on Reston.

The board of zoning appeals will discuss the matter at its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The 11-acre site is located off of Sunset Hills Road near the The land is currently zoned I-3 and I-4, for industrial use.

Lifetime has three locations in Virginia, including one in Centreville and Fairfax. The branch proposed for Reston would have indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor rock climbing wall, an indoor basketball court, as well as weights, cardio equipment and classrooms.

Obtaining zoing approval would be the first in a series of steps to gain clearance to build the club. Lifetime Fitness clubs average more than 100,000 square feet, which is many times larger than a typical health club such as
