Journey to the Bottom of Lake Anne

Wide variety of lost items found during lake repairs. Are you missing a 1966 license plate?

A statue of Buddha, a small cannon, a 1966 license plate, a lantern, a Dell laptop, a dog toy and the frame of a Kawasaki motorcycle were among the items  discovered when Reston’s oldest lake was lowered recently in order to make repairs to the concrete spillway.

watershed specialist Brian Petty found the items when
Lake Anne’s water level was lowered at least two feet to permit repairs and sealing of the concrete spillway riserlocated near Wiehle Avenue.

Over the years, Reston Association’s watershed team has found other items, said Nicki Bellezza, Watershed Supervisor. She said most are not in good condition so they are disposed of properly.

“During the lake cleanup we found a whole roll of carpet, lawn furniture, sunglasses and other small items," Bellezza said. “We found many manhole covers spread about the bottom of Lake Audubon when it was lowered in 2008.”

Bellezza said Fairfax County sent a crew to pick up the manhole covers. She added that most “found” items are in poor condition, so items like the ones Petty found sare rare.

She encourages residents to put phone numbers or other identifying information onto large items, such as boats, so they can be returned.

If a resident thinks an item is theirs, they should contact Reston Association Central Services Facility at 703-437-7658.
