Could You Swim a Mile Butterfly?

More than 500 swimmers took part in the annual Jim McDonnell Lake Swim at Lake Audubon, including two Reston Masters who showed their strength.

Over 500 swimmers braved the chilly waters of Lake Audubon to race in the Jim McDonnell Lake Swim on Memorial Day weekend.

It was the 26th consecutive year that Reston Masters Swim Team hosted the event, which raises money for a number of worthy causes.  The weekend included a clinic on Saturday, to enable swimmers to learn the course prior to race day, and one and two mile races on Sunday.

Among the many swimmers doing the usual freestyle stroke were two men who chose a more unconventional approach.  Sixty-four year old Larry Paulson of Herndon, and 58-year-old Charlie Tupitza of Warrenton, raced the one-mile event swimming entirely butterfly, an energy intensive stroke that few people can swim for more than 100 meters.
