New Family Naturals, which has been selling its wares at the Reston Farmers Market, has signed a lease to open a retail space at this summer.
New Family Naturals' retail operation — to be located next to store at 11412 Washington Plaza West — will be a community health food market and juice bar, where they will make and sell their signature kale chips, gluten free items, fresh smoothies and other vegetarian and vegan health food.
Owner Toya Tanis is using a new method to raise capital for the store, which she said she hopes to have open by Aug. 1.
The owners are trying to raise $6,000 to cover construction and equipment costs - about half of the $12,000 it will cost to get up and running.
Tanis has teamed with Indiegogo.com, a website that has been helping start-ups find funding since 2008. New Family Natural's campaign will run through mid-June.
According to New Family Naturals, some of the start-up costs include:
"We’ll also be featuring some awesome, locally produced goods, food and art," Tanis said in an announcement of the store opening. "It is our sincere hope that our little shop will be a gathering place as much as a marketplace. We are doing most of the physical, construction work ourselves to get the space ready. This will save us thousands of dollars in contractor fees and labor. What we still need to buy, however, is equipment and a small amount of inventory."
