New Year’s Eve may be the warmest day of the week across Northern Virginia, weather forecasters predict.

Monday’s high temperature will be in the mid-40s with mostly cloudy skies. The wind that whipped through the area over the weekend has largely diminished.

New Year’s Eve partiers will want to bundle up: Temperatures are expected to drop to 30 degrees by the time the clock strikes midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Those high and low temperatures are right in line with the average temperatures for this time of year in Northern Virginia, according to climate data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

New Year’s Day (Tuesday) will be cloudy with a high temperature of about 41 degrees.  There is a very slight chance of precipitation (10 percent) both Monday and Tuesday.

The temperature will drop again Wednesday, despite the return of sunny skies. The high temperature Wednesday will be just 35 degrees. Daytime temperatures will rise a little bit Thursday and Friday, reaching 38 to 40 degrees.

Overnight temperatures throughout the week will range from 28 to 35 degrees.

The normal high temperature for the DC metro area in January is 43.4 degrees, so we’ll be starting 2013 with temperatures a little bit colder than normal.
