Cold and rainy Reston Triathlon

More than 600 competitors up early to swim, bike and run.

It was a soggy Sunday for spectators and volunteers, but for the 691 entrants in the 27th annual Reston Triathlon, the conditions were quite good for racing.

Cool temperatures and on-and-off rain were "pretty favorable," says Neva Fulkerson,  the top women's finisher (2:15:43).

"A little rain was great for running, and it was not enough to make you cautious on the bike course," she said.

Fulkerson, who lives in Aldie, has been a triathlete since 2005, but this was her first Reston Triathlon.

Dan O'Connell of Herndon was the top men's finisher and the top finisher overall in 1:57:55.

"It was about my same time as last year, when I finished third," said O'Connell, 35.

"Everyone loves this race," he said. "The entries sell out in about an hour."

The course began at 7:00 a.m. (actually a slightly delayed 7:10 start) with a one-mile swim at Lake Audubon. The bike course went 23 miles through the streets of south Reston. The bike/run transition was at South Lakes High School. Racers then ran the 10K on the Reston bike paths before finishing in the football stadium at South Lakes.
