After The Flood: More Rain, Waterlogged Cars

Dozens of commuters' cars still in soggy Park and Ride lot.

Matt Patchett was busy at work on Thursday, so he did not see the viral photos of the Reston Park and Ride lot on Sunset Hills Road. He had no idea his 2006 Honda Civic was halfway submerged in flood waters.

More than The downpour flooded streets, turned creeks into lakes and damaged about 70 cars at the Fairfax Connector lot. Two deaths were reported nearby - and a 67-year-old man was killed near Great Falls when he was trapped in his car in rising water.

Patchett, of Sterling, parks his car in Reston and takes a Fairfax Connector bus to Crystal City to work at the Consumer Electronics Association.

"I had no idea what was going on until I got off the bus in Reston yesterday afternoon," he said. "I was in complete shock. My car was looking pretty bad."

Patchett took one of the shuttles provided by Fairfax Connector to the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride, where a friend met him to give him a ride home.

It was raining - again - Friday morning when Patchett surveyed the damage and was off to call his insurance company. The water went up past the seats on Thursday. By Friday, the water receded, but there were still puddles in the console and mud over nearly everything.

Fairfax County Public Schools canceled school and sports on Friday. There were leaks reported at South Lakes High School and Terraset Elementary School. South Lakes principal Bruce Butler said the damage was very minor. He says the South Lakes-Herndon football game may take place Friday or Monday.
