Thirteen students from South Lakes HS earned All District Band Honors this year, including five Seahawks who earned first chair positions. Places in the All District Bands were awarded to the following students based on competitive audition:
Kat Edmiston and Ben Kim earned alternate positions for Bass Clarinet and Percussion, respectively. Based on their All District Audition results, Alex, Ellen, Julia, Maya, Scott, Dylan, Sydney and qualified to take the All-State audition, and will represent South Lakes at James Madison University at this event in February.
The South Lakes representatives joined students from fourteen other Arlington and Fairfax County High Schools for the All District band event in Arlington on January 31st though February 2nd. The student ensembles rehearsed with their guest conductors Thursday evening through Saturday morning, and presented a concert on Saturday afternoon. The Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Kenneth Thompson, Assistant Dean in the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green University, presented a program including The Liberty Bell (Sousa) and Scenes from “The Louvre” (Dello Joio). The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Richard Floyd, the Texas State Director of Music, presented a program including A Bernstein Trilogy (Bernstein) and a new composition by John Mackey titled Sheltering Sky.
